Prior to 2007 Chic's Beach was THE place to be on the 4th of July. The beach was full of amateur pyrotechnics from the moment the sun set, well into the night. The beach wasn't well-patrolled and although fireworks were still illegal, any man or woman could load up their trunk in North Carolina and drive back in time to set off an impressive display of explosives.
All was fun, but it was very dangerous and left a ton of trash behind for residents to clean up. Eventually, the City of Virginia Beach took a hardline on personal fireworks. The beach entrances are generally manned to be sure everyone is following the law.
After VB tightened up on law enforcement, CXB did it's own fundraiser to hire a barge and a professional company to put on a show for the residents. It lasted for a few years but logistics, funds, and volunteers were hard to come by. Not to mention the literal fair-weather nature of the show and the disappointment that followed a canceled plan. It's a challenge to put on something of this magnitude with very few resources and competing events.
Fortunately, we have a great location to view the Ocean Park Civic League fireworks, scheduled for Saturday July 3rd. The OPCL is much larger than ours and works hard every year to put on a big a beautiful display for those up and down the Bay. We encourage any CXB resident who enjoys seeing the show that OPCL works tirelessly to put on every year, to donate to their fireworks fundraiser.
